The United States seeks to regain the “position of dominance” it once used to enjoy in the Middle East, says an activist.
“The game of smoke and mirrors that is being played is very clear … I would say that is the central feature of the situation so that United States wants to be the dominant force. That is the central factor. That has not changed,” Jim Brann, from Stop the War Coalition from London, said in an interview with Press TV.
“So with the possibility of Kobani falling, then the United States will obviously want to save face … and they are not the dominant force that they were once and that is the key factor in this situation as well. They are fighting to recover the position of dominance,” the activist said, in reference to Syria’s strategic border town of Kobani near the Turkish border.
The remarks come as fighting continues between Kurdish forces and the ISIL Takfiri militants to gain control over the Syrian city of Kobani.
According to Kurdish sources, the Takfiri militants intensified their onslaught from the south, west and east of the Kurdish city.
The border city is still under the ISIL group’s fire despite more than two weeks of airstrikes by the US-led coalition on the militants' positions.
“Turkey has remained in support of the NATO strategy of intervention in the region which has led to the present situation, but at the same time it has some differences and the difference is, for example, highlighted over Kobani and so on. But it is that struggle that you see going on,” the activist added with regard to Turkey’s role in the region.
Kobani and its surroundings have been under attack since mid-September, with ISIL militants capturing dozens of nearby Kurdish villages.
The weeks-long intense battle for the strategic town has forced nearly 200,000 people to take refuge in Turkey.
